3 days 3 cities

When travelling in the winter months it’s wise to leave a few days earlier and make the most of staying in some beautiful locations on the way. Having left Paxos on Wednesday we took the ferry to Igoumenitsa and then drove 40 minutes along the Egnatia to Ioannina, it is seriously the quietest motorway ever! Ioannina is a stunning university town based around a lake and castle, there is a tiny island located just a few minutes away that you can visit by boat where Ali Pasha is buried. Accommodation wise there are a range of places from small pensions within the castle walls to 5 star luxury. We tend to stay within the castle in a homely pension, the owner is so accommodating, http://www.hotelfilyra.gr

We also met a Greek/American couple that are restoring a number of historical buildings in and around the city into very comfortable places to stay, see http://www.heritage-hotels.gr it’s called Kalari and they serve fantastic coffee too.
On Thursday we drove again along the Egnatia to Thessaloniki, it takes just under 3 hours. Here we stayed in the Lathakia area, it has a kind of Covent Garden feel about it and is very vibrant. We’ve stayed at various places and this time it was Colours, no frills, easy to get to and friendly staff, The Bristol across the street is lovely for a treat.
Friday morning we drove to the airport parking just 15 minutes away and the friendly lads at Ikaros Parking dropped us to the airport, 7 euro a day! Bargain
And then onto London but that’s another story..
A real love of mine is running and what this did mean was taking in 3 great cities on foot, Ioannina, Thessaloniki and London! Well travelled trainers
