the 25th March

marks a double celebration in Greece, as Orthodox Christians they celebrate the Annunciation and also Independence Day. Schools and business’ are closed.

It is also the name day for those named Evan or Evangelia, meaning ‘good message’ as this was the day that God’s angel gave the message to the Virgin Mary that she will bring the Son of God into the world.

The school children of the island will lead a parade along the waterfront in Gaios, the dancing for this year will then take place in the high school, the parade tends to start around 11am.
